Turkey Day Give Away

I just have to say what an awesome group of volunteers we have at JCFC. From Jed Speras leading the whole deal, to Vaughn Van DeBoe organizing all 70 addresses into drive-able routes, to everyone that delivered and filled and carried boxes, you guys all rock.

We had hoped to be able to give away 50 boxes, but JCFC you guys far out did yourselves again. 70 families recieved boxes today with a complete Thanksgiving Day meal.

I am in awe of what God can do when people follow the leading of Christ and BE the church.

Tremendous.

Facebook

I finally did it. Im on facebook.

Turkey day giveaway

Just wanted to say how thrilled I am at everyone serving on this Turkey Day GiveAway plan. Our goal was to raise enough money and food to give out 50 complete meals tomorrow.

Not only did JCFC raise enough for 50, we raised enough funds for 65 baskets! Awesome.

As we were collecting names though in our city of people who really need help, we came up with about 68 names.

So we are just abit short.

You can go here and donate 37 per basket is you are feeling that love do so.

Everyone is welcome to come and serve with us tomorrow at the church office at 10 AM. Its going to be a great morning!

Christmas Presents

We have an awesome surpise for our kids this year. A new puppy. They are going to freak. So no one breathe a word about it please.

But Colin has been asking a thousand questions about the present. He keeps grilling me about what it could be.

Finally I told Colin, listen I cant tell you, but its something you are going to have so much fun with, you will love it. Its completely awesome.

He cocked his head at me and said, "Dad, is it another one of me?"

too funny

Ruth Harbor Banquet

I was able to attend the Ruth Harbor Banquet last night. What an awesome night as Jessica Dunker told the story to about 400 people about how God drew her and two of her close friends to start this ministry. It was an amazing night as I saw God doing things in other lives, confirming in them their call to serve.

I am so excited about our church and direction God has blessed us with. I am truly humbled to see God stirring hearts, and our church becoming a church consumed with others.

Anyone going to the Multiplicity conference in Dec in Houston? I am super excited about getting to here Dave Ferguson from New Thing Network. Its going to be great.

Let me know I would love to connect with you. Any potential church planters out there? I would love to buy you some dessert and get to know you on Thursday evening after the first sessions are completed.

Driscolls Porn Book

Here is a link for a great e-book dealing with the damaging issue/addiction to porn.

Its such a devastating problem that is rampant with men all over the world.

Just a word of advice, Driscoll is very frank. Not a casual read, but if you know someone who is dealing with porn, or you are, read it today.

Election

Im so glad this is done.

As always we should pray for our elected officials. I believe that God is 100% in control. That statement would be made about whoever won last night. No matter what your opinion of President Elect Obama or Senator McCain.

I wasnt really hurraying for any of the candidates, now they can just move forward with something productive.

Been a while

Well it has been a couple weeks since I have posted. God has been really shaping some things in my heart and life lately. He is really pushing me to trust in Him, in my successes and failures.

I spoke this weekend about "The House" and how we need to serve as the church. It is great go to church, its great to know about church, but there is nothing like being the church.

We are working on giving out 50 complete Turkey meals this Thanksgiving to families in need.
I am stoked and so excited to see so may people excite to serve. It is awesome for me to see new believers get so excited to give back in a small way after God does so much for them in their heart.

I love how pumped new Christians are to jump in and run with things. Awesome.

Whirlwind week

Working fast and furious for 3 sessions I'm teaching at the marriage retreat this weekend,
and the new series that kicks off Sunday called House ( you need to be there)
looking at all the budget issues for the next 12 months,
trusting God to bring the funding to finish this month,
excited about giving away as many Thanksgiving meals as we can't afford!
Stoked about some men in our church rising to leadership and taking ownership of real ministry
Feeling God push and challenge me like ever before
Physically tired and not well this week,
Our marriage is close and strong,
Thanking God for an incredible wife
Loving my kids,
Excited about this weather change
Typing at my mac at the table,
the kids are supposed to be sleeping,
but i hear footsteps,
to which I ask, "who is up?"
Colin responds, "Its me."
"Why are you up?"
"Checking to see if i bit off the the end of my finger..."
"Nope, Dad its still there."

Weekend

Today went well over all. I felt like I overworked the sermon today, couple that with physically not feeling well... and tadah, today.

Anyway, I am still reeling from the Catalyst conference, and feel like my mind is on information overload. I am going to retype my notes tomorrow. I will try to post some thoughts from the leadership conference. It amazes me how "leadership" pushes all of us. It is not just a switch you turn on, but its something that continues to grow, as we learn from others, by mistakes and successes.

Looks like we finished off the mymarriageisdead.com series well with 23 people giving their hearts to Christ. To God be the Glory. So awesome.

I am excited to continue to follow up with these people. I know God is wanting to do great things in the city.

My heart is thoroughly stirred to serve our city. The church needs to BE the church, not just exist. My heart breaks for the one distant form a God who love them so much.

Yesterday I took the kids downtown to pass out water and granola bars. We met a homeless man named Oscar who has a broken shoulder. That really moved the kids, to be injured and have to live on the street. Just after that I watched a ladies van being repossessed.

I pray these moments leave an indelible mark on the minds of our kids.

We will be gearing up for a big Thanksgiving Adopt a Family dinner. More details to come on that.

Scriptures that move me

One of my favorite Scriptures.

2 peter 3:9 (KJV as i learned it as kid)
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2 peter 3:9 NLT
The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

Gods heart is that all should know Him. What are you doing to make sure all know Him? I know I have been guilty of not doing what i can every time I could have.

One of the old car sales adages, I learned in the biz, years ago hits here pretty big...

"Everyday, Every time, Without Fail, No Exceptions"

I'm thankful that God never fails, anyday, no exceptions.

God make us like you, in all we do.

VP Debate

I wish Governor Palin and Senator Biden were running were the top of their respective tickets.

Good debate on both sides. Both were very respectable to each other, and I love both of their approach and comments.

Weekend update

Yesterday went really well. It seemed like everything really clicked as the worship began. I taught about how all couples fight and how to deal with it in a Godly way.

This series has been tremendous help in my own marriage as well. I love my wife and am proud to say that we are constantly working on our marriage.

On a different note we have had 19 people give their heart to Jesus during the last 4 weeks of service.

Join us this weekend as we look at Just Do It! We will be examining how our actions and words really connect!

Challenging Thought

I am in a coaching group right now with a pastor in New York named Nelson Searcy. He is lead pastor at The Journey Church.

He left a post today that is really convicting for me. Here is the quote.

“We are judged by what we finish, not what we start.”
- Anonymous

Hmm, what are we completing?

Excellence

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit" -Aristotle

We are streamlining things, and simplifying. I believe that excellence honors God with all my heart. Its not perfection, we cant be perfect every time of course, but the consistency needs to be there of our best.

I wrestle personally here, I believe that God is working in me, this thought of "excellence is a habit." If I dont watch myself, I can be lax in areas, and I dont want to be that way any more.

I want to honor God with what I do, what the church does, how we respond, how we deal with guests, how we help believers grow in faith, how we impact our community. (maybe grammatical sentence structure is an area I can work on as well)

handwriting cards

I am hand writing cards to every guest now. Trying to connect on a more personal level.

Today I wrote out like 9 cards. Doesnt sound like much to you maybe, but hand writing to me is huge. Well I got them all done and ready for Shanna to mail... a few minutes later she told me I wrote them all on the wrong side....

just my luck...

So I am writing them again, as I pray over each card, again...

Hmm, is God trying to get me to pray more?

weekend update

Another fine weekend at JCFC. The weather was great, and cooled off by the time service was over.

We jumped right into the second sermon in the series, www.mymarriageisdead.com called Perfect Seasoning.

There were at least 6 more people who gave their heart to Jesus this week, and I was able to connect with several families on Monday who are receiving some help in their marriage.

We are praying for 100 families to have major changes in their marriage due to this series. It is happening...

I got an email today from a couple in the church. Check this out (I changed the names...)

June and I have really connected with the current series and feel our marriage is already stronger just because we have focused on communication and each other. Without this series I don’t know that we would have taken the time to really talk about the things that we appreciate about each other. June and I have been married for eight years and together for 15 so there is a certain comfort that comes with that much time together. We both just assumed that there was a general understanding of love and appreciation. I know the assumption was correct but there is something far more powerful about taking the time to vocalize our feelings for each other. Like all marriages, we are not perfect, but we are better than we were two weeks ago. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait for the rest!

Keep praying, I am getting emails and hearing lots of talk about marriages becoming more healthy each week.

500th post

My favorite thing to do is baptism. It just doesn't get any better than helping people make that step of getting in the water and symbolizing that their sins are being washed away.

I am moved every time I see a baptism, whether live or video. Tomorrow we show this clip to the whole church.

I cant wait for you all to see it.

New Uncle

We were up yesterday around 4.30 to head to STL to see my sisters new baby boy Titus aka Mr T.

He is doing really well, and adjusting to life outside the womb! We are heading back to good ol Des Moines in a few hours here. Burning up that highway.

weekend update

If you werent there, man you missed it.

I have to say to all our volunteers and team, you guys were outstanding! The day went off amazing. We had 196 in attendance, with at least 6 people giving their life to Christ.

I saw lots of tears during the sermon, as I spoke from Song of Solomon about marriage. We specifically dealt with the way we speak to each other and overcoming insecurities through love!

The band was awesome, Kevin brought us through announcements, I spoke and the band closed out with LifeHouse cover Whatever it Takes. Beautiful.

Thanks again, invite your friends, and pray!

Dark Knight

Do I even need to say anything? WOW

Billboard Shot

I've spoken with several families who have seen the Billboards or got a mailer, and they have sparked all kinds of conversations.

Our goal is to see 100 marriages changed. Knowing that conversations are happening nightly thrills my soul. I am praying that trust is strengthened and relationships encouraged.

Pray with me.

Bad oil change

Oh man, I am having issues. Had my oil changed at my mechanics garage today. He had a new guy in, and after I got down the road, the engine started grinding and no oil pressure.

I pulled over and saw this....

Talk about bummed. I called the mechanic and had it towed back to his shop. He is taking care of it tomorrow. Pray there isnt any damage.

Weekend Update

1. The band was amazing yesterday. I am so moved every time we sing Overcome and Revelation song. What a powerful time of worship.

2. 5 people recommitted their life to Christ yesterday. Amazing. I love to see people being moved on by the Holy Spirit.,

3. Thank you for inviting your friends. It is making a difference in peoples lives. You never know that one invitation could be the one that the Holy Spirit uses to help them cross the line of faith.

4. Signed off today to send our 26,500 mailers to go along with our www.mymarriageisdead.com series. Pray with us for 100 marriages to be changed.

5. Over 3000 hits to the website since we have had billboards up.

6. I am getting emails nearly everyday from spouses wanting to heal their marriage.

7. Invite everyone you can to this new life changing series. Lets fill that theater and change our city.

100 in 6 weeks

Pray with us everyday during this month and next for 100 marriages to be changed.

I know its a ridiculous prayer, but I believe God honors ridiculous faith.

It is God plan that all come to repentance. I also believe its His plan for people to have an abundant life.

Merge those things, and we have a stellar series that is designed to transform marriages as hearts are changed as Jesus touches them.

www.mymarriageisdead.com

Invite everyone you know.

Lets fill our theater for Gods glory.

My BIble Journey

Man I have reading through Romans again this week. I love this book.

Romans 3

21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Whata week

I have to say I love the Olympics. We have been sucked in all week. From the swimming to the gymnastics to the track and field. I even was intrigued by the fencing. Wow.

Am I ever inspired to get int he pool.

Today was great. We are right in the middle of the series Nuts and Bolts, and today I spoke about having great friends. David and Jonathan kind of friends.

Cant wait to continue into the fall with www.mymarriageisdead.com We have had almost 1300 hits on the site this week.

Pray with me that 100 marriages can be changed for God's glory.

Medal Standings

Here is a link to the medal standings. Just in case your an Olympian dreamer like our house.

mymarriageisdead

Man, our IT dept, graphics, and video guys just rock. They have finished the site and its up and running.

You can check it out here. Ryan Rogness did and amazing job designing all this. Kevin Starkey shot and edited a powerful video. Paul (our IT Team Leader at the church) worked it all together to make it live on the net.

Besides that all the actors, all the prayers, and everyone else involved... A big Thank You.

I cant wait to see what God is going to do with this powerful series on our city in September.

The 6 Billboards will be up on Monday all over town.

Everyone pray that God moves peoples hearts to be a part of this series. We are believing God to transform marriages, hearts and lives.

mymarriageisdead

The site is almost done. Man is it awesome. Our fall series kicks off Sept 7th. www.mymarriageisdead.com hopefully the site is live this Saturday.

We have 6 billboards up on Monday, and 25000 mailers going out. BE in prayer that this series will draw and change lives for the kingdom.

I believe with all my heart in John 10:10. Jesus came so that we can have life to the full, in abundance. He wants people to have above average marriages. It can happen when Jesus is the center.

Sad Event

It is always sad to see a young man die. Sad to say that Greg Laurie son, Christopher, died this week in a tragic car wreck. He was the art director for Harvest Church in California. Harvest has had an awesome impact on Southern Cal, as well as the globe for the kingdom.

Pray for the family.

freecreditreport.com

I know the commercials get on your nerves, but its a great thing to do. Dave Ramsey has helped us pay off all of our credit cards off this year. We are down to just home loan and Suburban payment. We are working to get it sold as well.

Interesting though on my credit report I found some mistakes. An account shown as open from a few years ago. Closing that baby! and a few others that I am working on.

It is amazing how many things are set by your credit report. Now if I could only change my driving record....

nuts and bolts

We start an awesome sermon series tomorrow! Cant wait to get into it. We are getting back to some basics. Down to the nuts and bolts

Invite a friend here. Tomorrow we are looking at priorities vs commitments. So easy to get out of alignment.

You wont want to miss it!

Black History

I know that July inst Black History month, but it has been for me. Lately I have been really stirred at the racial tension sour country has been a part of for so long. It is very unfortunate, especially in the church.

Many Christians have what I call passive prejudice. They aren't in any way supportive of any kind of white supremacist movements, yet they have this underlying issue with other races.

I have been reading a ton online about the history of the Civil Rights movement. I am amazed about how many people took action about such injustice.

I applaud them. And I wonder if there are as many people today with the same kind of character.

Frustrated with oil costs

Saw this video today, and it makes a lot of sense to me. I am not an economist...
but I dont like the fact we use so much stinking foreign oil.

Lets do something.

I think T Boone here, might have some insight.

Thanks Rob for sharing this.

Future church planters

I have had opportunity to sit down with several guys this week who are looking to plant churches in the future. What a great time to chat about what God has done, and is wanting to do in the future.

I meet with some college students today for coffee, and really enjoyed being with them. One young man named Brandon is really going to do well as a church planter. Excited to see where God is taking him.

I wasnt able to join with ARC to church plant simply because I didnt know about it until we were already up and running, but I love it. Check it out if your considering launching soon.

Podcast

Tech issues for sure this weekend. Not only did we have Gomer announcing she was a whore, as the opening video began, and the video cable to the projector died less than an hour before service, Paul emailed us today saying that the podcast didnt record as needed.

Hmm. Seems like a stretching before growth.

Spent most of the morning today working on a follow up system for all of our guests. I want it to be uniform and consistent for each person walking through the doors of JCFC.

515 Alive

Super excited about partnering with 515 Alive this year. We helped out with event two years ago ad it was a blast.

515 is an urban music festival on July 26th downtown Des Moines. They are expecting to break 12,000 people in attendance this year. There are DJs, Break dance competition, urban art and graffiti contests, and even some giant piles of foam! They are working on some kids inflatables to play on as well.

Our premise is simply if you give a cup of water in Jesus name you are doing it as unto Him. We plan to give out thousands of water bottles on Saturday.

If you want to help with the event or donate some cases of water email us at shannak@jordancreek.org

Its going to be a great day.

dad, I hafta put the chick'n in my pocket

Colin and I ate at Chi-Fil-A for lunch. As we headed to the bathroom he got a "sample." As we rounded the corner he was still eating the nugget.

I look down and he is shoving it in his pocket. I said Colin, why are you putting it in your pocket?

Exasperated, he said to me, "Dad I hafta put the chik'n in my pocket, so it doesnt get pee on it!"

Sure that makes sense.

VBS

Well the kids are loving the VBS this week. They cant wait to get out the door every morning. Just wanted to say a big thank you to Jen Adair for hosting this at her house and leading the charge to invest in the kids of this community.

Also a big thank you to all the other ladies who have helped out in teaching, organization, and crafts. It takes a team. I am proud of the Kids Department at JCFC. You guys are rocking it!

I will try to get some pics up soon.

Tuesday

Internet is still messed up at the office. Qwest is sending us a new DSL router today. Cant wait to get that hooked up. Everything functions off that internet router in the office. Copier, computers, me apparently.

So I am at Amici, on 100th and Douglas. Great coffee shop. One of my favorites since Java Gs went out. By the way, I had a free coffee card there, and almost another full one. Bummer. I wonder if Amici would honor it.... I did just give them a shout out.

Monday

Looks like a pretty busy week this week.

Shanna is gone most of the week, and our internet went down at the office. It is crazy how much we depend on technology to function.

This weekend was interesting, with lots of Holiday travel.

Kicked off Love Always yesterday. I probably spent too much time telling the back story of Hosea. There is a lot of history to the minor prophets.

We are going to spend some time this weekend looking at redemption. Specifically chapter 3. What are the sacred raisin cakes that Israel loved so much?

Tomorrow night is Membership 1.0 If you havent registered do so today on the calendar on the right.

Wednesday, July 02, 2008

My Thoughts

1.  Super excited about this weekend's new series.  Love Always!

You wont want to miss a weekend of out.  We will be looking at the book of Hosea and the tension with his wife.  God used this amazing story of betrayal and heartache to show His Undying love for us.  Cant wait to teach on Gods Love and grace.

2.  We have a huge fall series lined up.  More to come.  It is going to be a pivotal point in the life of our church.

3.  Excited bout the Olympic trials.  (Dara is even more excited than I am, its crazy)

4.  Loved competing in the the HyVee Triathlon.  It was great!   Looking forward to doing another soon.  Go here to see some pics.

5.  Looking forward to some family time over the 4th with the kids!

Boundary Waters Trip Home

Hey its was a long car ride!

Land Update

As many of you were gone yesterday due to Fathers Day, you might now be aware of the status with the land. We have met with the city, and after all the things that they would require us to do, the cost of the land is going to double. Taking a wonderful deal on the property from 700,000 to an estimated 1.5 million. Some of those costs we knew would be coming, such as the build out of Ashworth to a 4 lane road, but others caught us by surprise. After discussing this with our Staff and leadership team we feel like, in the best interest of the church body, to wait on this particular piece of property.

I know many of you have given already to the building fund, and others of you have earmarked money for it. If you still want to give you are more than welcome to give to this campaign. We will put that money aside and pray for the next piece of property. We know that God has something instore for us as a church body. I fully believe in the Sovereignty of God.

I also know that our mission is to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus. We are all about building relationships and encountering God. But we cant be so strapped with a land payment that we can't do ministry. Having property is great, but seeing lives changed is what its all about!

Be praying for our church. Remember, "Lord make us inviting!"

weekend Update

Great weekend with Steven Furtick speaking from Charlotte, NC. He did a great job speaking about Lord Make us Audacious!

At least 3 people rededicated their heart and lives to Jesus this weekend. Awesome.

Dont miss this weekend, with Ed Young, as he speaks about Lord Wake Us Up!

Hy-Vee Triathlon

Totally bummed that the Hy-Vee Tri is now a Dry Tri! No swimming due to all the flooding. So all the swim training.... a wash.

Now its a 10K run, a 40K bike, and then a 5K run...

Running is my least favorite of the events.

Week Away

Spent last week in Northern Minnesota and Canada with my Brother in Law, Daine. Man was it ever great to get a way for a few days without a cell phone or email.

This is a tiny piece of what we had to enjoy everyday. Awesome. I love to camp and canoe.

Gearing up for the next series in July. We were going to go a completely different direction, but I have been reading about the OT prophets a bunch lately. I am so moved by their heart for their city and country.

The story of Hosea and Gomer always moves me so much. Gods undying love, grace, and compassion for people is overwhelming... So we are going to be inviting you to a wedding. The marriage of compassion and heartbreak.

Gods every present love for His creation.

BTW, dont miss this weekends service. The One Prayer series is great. check it out here. Pastor Steven Furctick will be speaking this week, from Elevation church in Charlotte.

Bible Journey

Powerful text today from I John 3:4-6

"All who indulge in a sinful life are dangerously lawless, for sin is a major disruption of God's order. Surely you know that Christ showed up in order to get rid of sin. There is no sin in him, and sin is not part of his program. No one who lives deeply in Christ makes a practice of sin. None of those who do practice sin have taken a good look at Christ. They've got him all backward."

Surely we know... but I fear too many dont know. Some 350,000 people wont be in service this weekend in our city alone. Surely they dont know that Christ showed up to rid them of sin.

Will you invite someone to have the freedom you now have in Christ?

Church Planters Round Table

I am in Oklahoma City today and tomorrow for a great event. A few years ago I got invited to be a part of some of the most successful church planters in the country. It is a great time to listen and recharge my batteries. These guys have all different backgrounds, thoughts, and ideas, but I always leave with a bigger picture of the Kingdom and how to reach more people.

I drove this year, and am ready to crash. I will have some blog links for you late tomorrow of some of the guys.

Made a new friend from Ohio today. Konan Stephans. He is hitting it out the park in Columbus! He also is a tri-ahthlete. Pretty cool guy.

What does over 1600 miles in a car amount to?

Lots of hilarious things being heard from the back seat.

1. Less than five miles out of town, from Colin, "Dad are we there yet?"

2. 10 minutes later, "Dad, How many minutes til we get there?" (its about a 6-7 hour trip)

3. "Dad, did you see that sweet race car?" I have one of those...

4. "Dad, Now how many minutes."

5. "Dad, I have some ear stuff on my finger" (wax) "I needa put it back."

6. "I gotta potty real bad."

7. "Dad, Colin is picking his nose and showing me the boogers!"

8. "Dad, Now how many minutes?"

9. "Dad, can we listen to Hannah Montana again?"

10. "Aw gross, he just ate that booger!"

random thoughts

1. Whirlwind week. Dara's grandmother passing. Leaving our pastors retreat early. Renting two cars to get home... Crazy

2. Great Sunday. The band did great. Sermon was pretty direct about nurturing marriages.

3. Podcasts are down, our tech team is having some IP issues. But it will be up soon.

4. Got to spend some time with my grandma today. She is battling cancer for the 4th time. Unless God intervenes, this time doesnt look promising.

5. Our family and friends our digging out the rubble from the F4 tornado that hit Neosho Mo. The Lake family (SR) lost their house. Praise God they survived.

6. Took a personality test today. Love them and hate them. Love to see the strengths, but hate to see those disappointing weaknesses. Man do I always need to grow as a leader.

7. Been thinking a lot about heaven past month. Dont think we do that enough as believers. It is going to be great.

8. Praying for the people in China after the earthquake. So terrible

Random Thoughts

1. This is a busy week! But exciting. I keep getting email from people about how God is blessing them for tithing.

2. We had at least 10 families commit to tithing this weekend. Awesome. I know God is going to supernaturally bless them.

3. Shanna is rocking our office. She is getting all kinds of things done. Its so awesome to have her in a couple days a week now!

4. Membership 2.5 is tonight and I am pumped. We want everyone in our church to be a part of our membership classes. 1.0 is awesome, but 2.0 and 2.5 will change the way your view being a follower of Christ. If you want a deeper experience, be at the next 2.0

5. Love my wife and kids. Dara is finally feeling some better, and its nice to be able to really talk with her again. She has been out of it since Wednesday with double ear infection and step throat.

6. Moving forward with the property purchase. Lots to check out and examine, but exciting to be headed toward 10.1 acres on Ashworth and Jordan Creek Parkway. Be praying about our big Property Sunday on June 29th...

7. Got the new Need to Breathe album today! Shonda sent it via Shanna! Awesome, thanks. They are one of my favorite bands!

Money Answer Book

We offered this book to anyone who wanted it for $5 bucks this weekend. We will again have copies Sunday if you want to purchase one.

It is a scratch the surface Ramsey book, but informative.

We should have another 25 copies this weekend. They are first come first serve. You may want to buy 2, one for yourself and one for a family member.

BTW, the church isnt making any money on these, it is a deal we worked out with Family Christian Book Store. They normally sell for 12.99

Weekend Update

Sunday was great, I missed Dara being gone from service. She just helps me when she is sitting there "with me." You may not understand if your not a preacher! Pray for her, she has been sicker than I have seen her in years.

We had 172 in service, with at least 3 people giving their life to Christ. This "money" series has been awesome, we have had so far over 12 people commit or recommit their life to Christ while we have bee TALKING ABOUT MONEY! PTL

Yesterday we specifically spoke about bringing the tithe, the podcast should be up. If you have never faithfully brought the tithe, then you havent ever really lived in Gods Blessing. It truly is the next step in the life of a believer.

Remember this is the only place in Scripture, God says to Test Me. So we are as a church. Many of you took the 90 day challenge yesterday. I will extend it to you today again. Commit with 100% heart to bring a full 10% tithe to the church for the next 90 days, if your not blessed, then we will cut you a check for your money back.

What do you have to loose? A blessing?

God's blessing on 90% does way more that our trying with 100%

June 29th we will be kicking off a campaign to raise the 700,000 needed to purchase the ground. we will taking a cash offering that day to raise as much money as possible for the land. We will also be taking monthly pledges. Be praying about what God would have you to give over and above your normal tithe and offering for this amazing kingdom building endeavor.

Above is a pic of the site at 7770 Ashworth. I am trying to get the architects rendering up.

One Prayer

Check out this idea for June. I love Craigs kingdom mindedness! Get ready to hear some other guys speaking at JCFC in June.

AS it stands right now, I will be speaking the first Sunday, and then utilizing some of these guys for the rest of the month. It will be a totally new experience for all of us, but it will be great to see what God will speak to us through some other pastors who have a heart for the Kingdom.

Funniest Thing I have seen in a while

just watch this

My grandma

Just spoke with my mom, and they said my grandmas cancer is aggressive and there is nothing they can do. Surgery is too involved, and not good options. Radiation is out because she had cobalt radiation some 40 years ago. The Doc said that since they have no idea how much she had then, they dont want to try any more for fear it will cause more damage than good. And the Chemo doctor said no, since she didnt respond well to it 2 years ago with the colon cancer.

So not good odds. She wants to enjoy the summer and work in the yard, and just live.

Pray for her and my family.

Weekend Update

What a Sunday, huh? If you werent here this weekend you missed it. It was the 70's revisited for sure. During the meet and greet, the band played the Ojays Money song (the theme from the Apprentice) and I walked out in the powder blue 70 suit, and afro wig. It was great.

I then spoke about the the bondage that finances have on our life, and the freedom that come from freeing ourselves from that slavery. There are 5 time more scriptures on money and giving than prayer. 66% of the topics of the parables Jesus spoke of where about money, giving, and possessions. So I figure if Jesus spoke about it frequently we should too.

It is a very spiritual topic. The Bible is full of references to how we should handle the money.

Closed the service dealing with how each of us have a sin debt that we CANNOT pay on our own, no matter what we do, give or act like. Jesus paid it all, and at least 8 people accepted Christ or re-dedicated their life.

It was a great Sunday.

Dont miss next week, we are going to be making a huge announcement. The biggest in JCFC history.

Invite your friends TODAY, as we learn how to become financially free from some timeless Biblical principles that apply to everyone!

Interesting week and random thoughts

I know I have been out of the loop lately. Dara left on Tuesday for Orlando with Anna Tucker our college friend for Anna's 30th., They are having a ball, and I ma keeping the home fires burning... sort of.

So far we have made it, everyone is fed and rested, dishes done, house is clean, and I have been able to make most of the normal appointments to this point.

I am stoked about tomorrows service, I love the buzz of starting a new series. Tomorrow starts "mind your own business" and I promise it will be memorable. You wont want to miss it.

There is going to be at least two major annoucnements this series. One coming next weekend.

It has been great to spend more time with my kids. They are cracking me up. Colin has said some hilarious things this weeks.

My Grandma

Just got home from visiting my grandma Brown in the hospital. She beat colon cancer in he last two years, but they just found a large tumor in her abdomen. It is causing her some intense pain and excessive amount of blood in her urine. They did a biopsy but we dont have any test results back yet. Either way they have to remove it.

Just pray for her and my family. No one really knows which side is up right now.

More to come, as I know about it.

Tri Training

Well I have been actively training for the HyVee Tri in June since the begining of January.

I have joined a group at Prairie Life Fitness and it has been amazing. They have been pushing us and forcing us to really grow as an athlete. I love it.

The first day they recorded a bunch of stats on our performance level and level of fitness. Then Sunday we redid all those same events and compared our scores.

I have had amazing results. I shaved 7 seconds off my 50 meter swim and 6 minutes 20 sec off my 500. Now granted I swam like a drunken pig when I first started, and now i actually know how to swim, but...

Anyway, i am in the best shape I have been in years, and have lost significant weight, and feel wonderful. I cant wait to compete. June 22, here I come.

Change and why we dont like it

The old adage is that "people resist change."

That phrase has bothered and haunted me for years. Personally I love change. It always is exciting for me. I love the adventure. I thrive on the how is this all going to play out.

What I have come to is that people don't like change because it forces them out of their comfort zone.

Change in the workplace forces them to learn a new system or a have a new manager. Its sometimes hard.

Change in the church causes unknowns, forces a person to trust God and their leaders, not just their own stable feelings they have been feeling for years.

The bottom line is change forces growth, and growth hurts. The benefits far out way the pain, but in the moment people don't want the pain, so the resist the growth and then assume they don't like change.

To grow spiritually you have to change what you have been doing. You have push yourself to read your Bible, pray more, even speak to someone about coming to church, or better yet share with them what God has been doing in your life. But all that hurts, because you have to sacrifice time, and maybe your favorite reality show, or you have to sacrifice your own fear and pride to speak to someone. It hurts, and because it hurts we resist it to the point that we don't do it like we should. When the benefit of growing in Christ far out ways the pain of change.

Yet at the end of the day, too many will still resist it.

Where are you at today?

Mind Your Own Business

Here is the new Artwork for the Series starting in April

Finally better

Well that last post was just a teaser. I was only in the "I think I feel better, but I guess I am really not" moment. Terrible.

This respiratory flu, or whatever it has mutated to these days is terrible. I don't like super strength germs. That is why I am not a big antibiotic guy. My theory is it just makes them stronger.

Anyway.

Lots of things transpiring. This weekend service is going to be great. Invite your friends and neighbors. I will be presenting a very clear Gospel message as we discuss the reality of heaven and hell. You wont want to miss it.

We are gearing up for a great easter Sunday. We have a spectacular video planned as well as a trailer for our Mind Your Own Business series beginning in April.

I was able to get a some paper work done, and prep for the weekend.

Tomorrow I will be up an running!

Past Couple Weeks

Man it has been a whirl wind, but God has been faithful. We went to the C3 conference in Dallas, off the hook. Loved it.

Almost our whole church has been fasting and God has been doing some great things. Worship rocked this weekend! Thanks to some help from the guys at Guitar Center we finally got our sub working right. What a difference it makes. Thanks Bill and Mike. If you need anything sound wise head to GC in West Des Moines. They will take care of you.

I am meeting some guys this Thursday about some preliminary plans for property. God is blessing. Pray about this 10 acres. I know God wants to bless we just need to be in alignment with Him!

Dont miss this weekend. We start a great new series called "K(no)w Really" This Sunday we will be looking at the validity of the Scripture. Next Weekend at is Heaven and Hell really real. And finally on easter Sunday we will be looking at the truth of the resurrection.

Invite your friends. Even those skeptical. This a great series to let God move on their heart!

C3 conference

I am headed to Dallas this week to hang out with Ed Young at the C3 conference. Well not actually Ed, this year, but I will see him anyway.

So my posts will be randomly dispersed between driving and listening. We are driving to Dallas because we are taking 6 total from our team. I am super excited to be going with such a great group of people who really want to change out city!

I am blessed to be surrounded by such a creative and hard working team.

Daniel Fast

Here is a link to the paperwork we passed out today in service. It has some guidelines and multiple recipes.

I challenge everyone to take a look at what we are doing, listen to this week and last weeks sermon and join us as we fast. Go to sidebar and subscribe through Itunes!

Be journaling, reading your Bible and praying during the next few weeks, as we discipline ourself to do what we ought, so later we can do what we want.

Blessings.

Volunteer Video

This is a video my friend Rob Ketterling from River Valley Church. It is such a great piece. I love creativity.

Wednesday Thoughts

Well it is Wednesday again, and the good ole middle of the week.

We have had a crazy one at that. Tuesday was a great day of meetings. I try to stack most all the meetings I can in one day. It helps to be in meeting mode.

We are in week 2 of Dave Ramseys Financial Peace. It is awesome, but trying to get out of debt seems to create all kinds of other scenarios. My truck broke down. I love a diesel, but I sure dont a whole lot about them. I did get the truck up and running this afternoon!

Drake Bulldogs finally lost. What a great run though! We are so proud of them.

My kids are taking swimming lessons and it is hilarious.

Gearing up for this fast starting this weekend. 21 days to change our church family. I cant wait, and I am getting the meat in this week! Daniel Fast here we come.

I challenge everyone to pick up a prayer journal to log what God is doing in your heart.

Weekend Update and More

~Today's service was great! Worship transition between songs was better than ever. Sermon was very direct about fasting and spiritual growth, but had a wonderful response. Next Sunday we begin a 21 day Daniel Fast. It is going to be a turning point in the Life of JCFC. You wont want to miss one sermon in this series.

~If you missed it today, then download the podcast here.

~Dara and I have committed to get out of debt before the end of the year. God has supernaturally made a way were it didnt seem possible. It is amazing what God can and will do if you align yourself with His Word.

~I have been training like crazy to compete in a Triathlon this year in June. I am in better shape than I have been in years. Loving my time at the gym. It just allows me to decompress and relax, as I push my body further than I have in long time.

~Colin is at a stage where he is just hilarious. We have story after story, about him right now. From eating food off the floor to picking up the scent block in a urinal, to being totally smitten with adult women to the point he is showing off to them with whatever he can think of to impress them. Tonight he told Megan, Rachel Crouse's room mate that (in his man voice) "Hey Megan, my dad has a black grille"

~Creek Kids 2008 Meeting is this Tuesday from 7-8.30 at the Christlife Office. You wont want to miss it!

~Lisa Little is Rocking the new Creek Kids Early Ed group. The kids love her, the parents love her, and it is great. Bring your 3-K kids this week.

~Great videos the past two weeks. Should get them up on the blog tomorrow and on Youtube. You'll crack up.

Snow, Snow, Snow

We are buried in Snow here in the metro. I am not a fan of winter at all, but I must say the snow is beautiful. (I have had plenty so far this year though.)

Just so everyone knows, it is supposed to snow and be cold this weekend again! But never fear we will be having service. If by some starnge reason it is absolutely too dangerous to be out on Sunday, check your local news stations Sunday morning.

We need to have church this weekend though! we kick off a new series about fasting, Larger than Life. If you want to live according to God's plan, and be blessed more than you ever thought imaginable, you won't want to miss a second of this series.

Invite a friend to service this weekend!

City Wide Church

Had a great lunch today with several pastors in the city. There is a movement beginning here in Des Moines to do some city wide mens groups. Each church is partnering together to help men become real men. Ed Nichols from Hope has had God dealing with him about this for quite some time.

We have been using Men's Fraternity this year, specifically "The Quest for Authentic Manhood." It has been great.

This new para-church ministry will be loosely based around Mens Frat and linking lay leaders from different denominations, ethnicities, and age groups together. I think it is going to change the face of Des Moines.

Super Pumped.

Greatest quote from the day was from Michael Hurst from Elim Fellowship.

"The largest church in this city are the people who don't go"

That should do something to us.

God stir me, move me, break me, help me to see this city with your heart.

Creek Kids Addition

Lisa Little is getting ready to rock our younger kids in our Creek Kids department. We are dividing the current structure this weekend. Lisa will be taking the the 3 year old through kindergarten kids. She has an awesome curriculum plan laid out that kids and parents both will love.

We have been praying for this opportunity for quite some time now. Lisa is perfect for this ministry. She has a degree in early ed and loves to teach.

We are still looking for the perfect name for this new addition. Any suggestions?

This weekends video

Check out this video of Sophia. She did such a great job. I video is just a touch dark, but check out how powerful it is!

Curse of Knowledge

How many of you know this song?

Bum,badum, dum, dum, dum. Bumbadum, dum, dum, dum. Bumdadum, dum, dum, dum, Bum badum, dum, dum dum.

Easy right? One of the most commonly known songs in the world.

Guess it yet? Happy Birthday.

It seamed really easy for me, but I was singing it in my head, as I typed it. Try is with someone, pound out the beat to someone on a table and see if they know it.

99% of people wont, yet it seems so easy in our minds.

The curse of knowledge. We do this in the church all the time. In our minds it sounds like service was great. Or the terms we use, we expect everyone to know. Or when we expect everyone to know that song we have sang 20 times, when its their first time in a church. Or when we as pastors say, we all know the story of ________. When sometimes we dont all know.

Lets examine what we do with believers, and unbelievers alike.

Sad state of affairs

Erwin McManus weighs in on Why Churches are Declining in America…

“My primary assessment would be because American Christians tend to be incredibly self-indulgent so they see the church as a place there for them to meet their needs and to express faith in a way that is meaningful for them.”

While that is a part of most every church in the nation, that is not the reason we have church. Jesus didnt come for the spiritually healthy. He didnt come for the religious crowd. HE came for those who need Him.

It is our focus to be a place where unconnected people can connect with God. We exist as a church body, not to just Hi-Five our Christian buddies. No, we exist to help people become fully devoted followers of Christ.

Whether they have some church background, none, or are disenfranchised with the church for whatever reason, I believe that God has placed JCFC right in the heart of the marketplace for this reason. I have had email after email in the past two weeks about what God is doing in people's lives. It is awesome.

We are gearing up for a series starting in February called Larger Than Life. We are taking 4 weeks to discuss some basic spiritual growth principles. I know God is going to do something radical in all of our lives as we draw near to who He is during February.

We are going to do something never attempted in the History of JCFC. You wont want to miss Larger than Life.

Weekend Update

Another chilly Sub-zero day. I have to say, it was cold going out to start my truck early yesterday morning. Despite the freezing weather, we had a great service.

Dara and the band did a great job leading everyone in worship. It truly was good, and God was touching people! I love to look around and see people engaging with God. At the start of the sermon they covered the song Dirty Little Secret by the All American Rejects. They really did a great job, we have some really gifted musicians.

I spoke about Secrets, and how our life is like a fish bowl. If we dont let God do some routine maintenance we get full of algae and nasty on the inside. It is time to allow God to clean us from the inside out.

Great attendance with 8 new families! A few from the Article in Juice Magazine about the up and coming churches in Des Moines that we were featured in.

I am going to be blogging for Juice on a weekly basis along with a few other pastors in town as well. Going to be great.

I am off to take some food to the Bridge people at 80/35 and Hickman tonight. Its a cold snowy evening to be sleeping under the bridge.

Confirmation that Joshua 25:1 is part of the canon

Take a look at this:

via churchrelevance.com by Kent Shaffer on 1/18/08

Children’s ministers and missionaries have been using clown ministry for years, but University of Sheffield researchers discovered that most children ages 4 to 16 dislike clown images. The research was an effort to find ways to improve healthcare environments for children and young people.

As adults we make assumptions about what works for children. We found that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable.
- Dr. Penny Curtis :: Researcher :: Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth

Very few children like clowns. They are unfamiliar and come from a different era. They don’t look funny, they just look odd. Children are much more happy with things stuck on the wall that have some sort of personal relevance for them, not some images that are foisted upon them by adults.
- Patricia Doorbar :: Child Psychologist

I find Patricia Doorbar’s remarks particularly fascinating because she suggests that clowns are from an era that is no longer relevant to today’s children. Despite this, I am aware of some clown ministries that children do enjoy, but I wonder if they would be even more effective if they repackaged their look but kept the same techniques.

Random things

1. Apparently all the swimming techniques I have learned all my life are WRONG! I am training for this Tri and Chris my trainer, pretty much changed everything I do in the water.

-Did you know you are supposed to exhale the entire time your head is in the water!

2. On days like this, (wake up to like -8) you just wonder what it would be like to wake in say... Miami...

3. Apparently there is a button on my BlackBerry that changes all the keys to some Greek characters. Of course, I accidentally found it. And I dont know how to switch it back!

4. Ana did a great job cheering last night for the Des Moines Lions! It was her first time on the floor!

5. Tomorrow is going to be great. I am believing God to free some people from some past failures, and confessions. You wont want to miss it!

My Condition

As some of you know, I have a problem. Mark Main has "lovingly" labeled my misfortune with technology as a "condition."

It doesn't matter what I have or what I am near, I can break or cause a malfunction in electronic things. Just the other day I was trying to have my phone fixed at the AT&T store, talking about my Condition, when the card reader broke!

So needless to say, I was at the gym running away yesterday when my Ipod locked up. Not just locked up but eventually went to some diagnostic screen!

After messing with it for a half an hour, it revived...

But needless to say the Condition strikes again.

Suitcases

"Everyone carries a suitcase. How a man unpacks that suitcase determines his quality of life."
-Dr Robert Lewis

How are you unpacking your life? Do you need help? Why not join us as we journey through life together? You dont have to carry it all alone. You might even learn to set some of it aside.

This Sunday we are looking at Confessions. Invite a friend.

Quick thoughts

1. Totally jazzed about what God is doing in my life right now.

2. Can't wait to see what God is going to be doing in the life's of people in this community this year. The upcoming series are going to be great!

3. I am concerned about the many people who live under the bridges right here in West Des Moines? How many of you pass under 80/35 on Hickman everyday? Did you know that between 4-12 people live under that bridge each day? What impact is JCFC having on them?

4. This weekend and next is going to be great. This Sunday is the band is covering All American Rejects song, Dirty Little Secret. You wont want to miss it. Next Sunday is Daughtry "Its Not Over." Look for a great video testimony intermixed with the Sermon.

5. Invite a friend this week! Remember you are playing a part in helping someone recieve the life change God has blessed you with.

Life group email

This is an excerpt from an email from one of our first time Life Group Leaders...

"I can not explain in words how lastnight was. As all of you know, God works in many ways and he has a plan for all us. I definetly know now that this is what I was suppose to do. I am still in awe today. This is exactly what I want and need to experience for me to grow closer to God. This is just after one night."

I love it, and so jazzed to see someone stepping out in faith that maybe pushes them a bit!

Everyone needs to get connected in a Life Group. You aren't going to want to miss this new trimester!

Remember as we grow larger we must grow smaller in Life Groups.

If you havent gotten connected yet contact Christian Walk today.

Lots Happening

I have had several meetings in the past few weeks getting things lined out for this upcoming year. I have to say I love to dream out loud. It is awesome to see God bringing dreams to reality that are even bigger than I could have dreamed.

Kevin Starkey is hitting it out of the park as our new Family Life Pastor. He has been working through all of our systems for Creek Kids and Baby Steps and has come to so great ideas. We are launching a 5th theater beginning in February for our kids ministry.

Lisa Little is going to be taking over the 3-Kindergarten age bracket, and she has some wonderful ideas to make it awesome for our kids. The whole idea is that they have a blast while they learn about who Jesus is!

Also be praying about direction for property for our church. We are looking at a few different places and just needing God to help us both with a decision and with finances.

Mentors Part 2

I think being mentored is one of the greatest things a leader can do. I have several other mentors that I meet with on a regular basis.

Being a mentor is as great or greater reward than being mentored!

I challenge everyone to be looking for someone who you can began to lead. It isnt something that takes hours of time from your week, but it can be life changing in someone's life. Begin to pray about who you can have influence with.

It doesnt have to be someone you are very close with, nor does it have be something that is "super spiritual" either.

As a mentor you need to make a list of what areas you have success or have excelled in. Use those talents and abilities that God has blessed you with. Bless someone else with that skill set.

Mentors Pt 1

Three cheers for mentors!

Mens Fraternity last Thursday we discussed mentors. Dr Lewis talked about not only why we need mentors, but how they affect us, and how we can be one.

The interesting point is that a Father can only take his son so far. He is not objective, and often sees the flaws and areas that need improvement. That is no throw off on Dads, it just the way we are.

Mentors though see beyond that realm. The challenge you to go beyond your self. The push in a loving way, that makes you feel scared and accomplished at the same time. Love it.

So I was looking back over my life. Eugene Vincent was a guy I worked for in High School, and some in college. He ran a body shop on about 60 to 80 acres ( i think). My job was to learn how to be a body man. I loved it, it was dirty and dusty and probably shaved a few years off my life living in the fumes, but I learned so much.

The first couple hours of the day, I was supposed to take care of the farm. He had cattle and horses, a stud horse, a few hogs and lots of fence and barns to maintain. (I have since decided I dont like cattle or fences but none the less)

Gene never really told me exactly how to do any of the projects. He just told me the general idea of what needed to be done, gave me the proper tools, and said that I could do it.

I remember a few times, not really believing that I could do what he asked me, but again in a very confident way, he pushed me and them usually left me there to handle it.

He trusted me with things that were probably beyond me. He challenged me to grow. He pushed me to excel. And I thrived in it. I didnt make bags of money by any stretch, but I wouldnt trade those times for anything.

In a strange sort of way it made me a greater leader, because it developed a fearlessness in me like never before.

Thanks Gene for being a mentor and maybe not even knowing it.
